What should you do if your MacBook gets wet?
Immediate steps that can reduce the risk of damage after a MacBook comes into contact with water or another liquid.
The first few minutes matter
- Immediately disconnect the charger and every accessory.
- If the Mac is still on, shut it down without continuing to work.
- Remove excess liquid from the exterior with a soft, absorbent cloth.
- Place it on a stable, ventilated surface away from heat.
What you should not do
- Do not turn it on to see whether it still works.
- Do not connect the charger.
- Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, or compressed air.
- Do not place it in rice: rice does not remove internal moisture and can introduce particles.
Why an early inspection matters
A MacBook may appear normal after drying while moisture or residue remains under the keyboard or on the logic board. Corrosion can continue over time. An early inspection can identify and clean affected areas before the computer is powered again.
If your data is important
Mention it before any work begins. Avoid repeated attempts to turn on the computer: protecting the information and repairing the Mac can require different priorities.
