Why is your MacBook getting hot, and what can you do?

How to distinguish normal thermal behavior from a sign that deserves inspection.

When heat can be normal

Demanding work such as video editing, gaming, installing updates, or indexing may temporarily increase temperature and fan speed.

Improve ventilation

Do not use the MacBook on a bed, pillow, or sofa. Soft surfaces can block airflow. A firm table helps the cooling system operate correctly.

Signs that deserve inspection

  • Fans remain at maximum speed without demanding work.
  • The Mac shuts down or displays temperature warnings.
  • There is extreme slowdown, unusual odor, or concentrated heat.
  • Vents are blocked or visibly dusty.

What not to do

Do not insert objects or direct compressed air into the vents. If the behavior continues after a restart and use on a suitable surface, request professional diagnostics and cleaning.
