When should you replace your MacBook battery?

Signs that can help you recognize when a MacBook battery needs an inspection or replacement.

Common signs

  • Battery life has decreased noticeably.
  • The MacBook shuts down while charge is still indicated.
  • The battery charges very slowly or inconsistently.
  • macOS shows “Service Recommended.”
  • The trackpad lifts, the bottom case changes shape, or a gap appears in the enclosure.

How to check battery health

Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and select Battery. Battery Health shows whether the condition is normal or service is recommended. Maximum Capacity also helps you understand how much capacity remains compared with when the battery was new.

When to stop using it

If you notice swelling, deformation, unusual heat, or an unfamiliar smell, shut down the MacBook, disconnect it, and do not press the enclosure. A damaged battery needs technical attention and should never be punctured or handled.

A lower percentage is not the whole diagnosis

A battery is a consumable component and loses capacity over time. Replacement depends on the diagnosis, the condition reported by macOS, and how battery life affects your daily work.
