What should you do if your iPhone gets wet?

What to do —and what to avoid— when an iPhone or its connector comes into contact with moisture or liquid.

Act calmly

  1. Disconnect the cable from the iPhone and from the power adapter.
  2. Remove the case and dry the exterior with a soft cloth.
  3. Hold the connector facing down and tap the iPhone gently against your hand to help remove liquid.
  4. Leave it in a dry area with airflow.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not use external heat or compressed air.
  • Do not insert paper, cotton swabs, or other objects into the connector.
  • Do not place it in rice: small particles can cause additional damage.
  • Do not force wired charging when a liquid-detection alert appears.

How long should it dry?

Apple recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before trying the cable again. If the alert remains, complete drying can take up to 24 hours. If the iPhone was submerged, becomes hot, restarts, or behaves abnormally, consider a technical inspection.

Water resistance is not permanent

Protection can decrease because of normal use, impacts, or previous repairs. A water-resistant model is not immune to every liquid incident.
